Schutt Conservation Project Complete
We are excited to share that 107 acres of the Slate River Wetlands is now conserved forever!
The Crested Butte Land Trust is honored to work with the property owners, Suzanne and Bob Schutt on this landmark conservation project.
Situated between Town Ranch and Riverbend, this parcel of land includes 1.2 miles of the Slate River and is defined by a mosaic of wet meadows, ponds, abundant wildlife and water resources. Teeming with biodiversity and serving as an important migratory corridor, we are thrilled that this open space will be protected forever.
This conservation easement will also ensure that the public will have access to the property’s winter Nordic ski trail and a portion of the Deli Trail connecting Town to neighborhoods and trails to the south.
Thank you to Suzanne and Bob Schutt, the Town of Crested Butte, 1% for Open Space, the Gunnison Valley Land Preservation Fund, Great Outdoors Colorado, and individual donors for helping fund this important conservation project.

Winter Field Trips
Mark your calendars for our winter field trip series. We’ll be skiing and snowshoeing out to the Magic Meadows yurt where we’ll meet representatives from partner organizations to learn about the work they do on conserved lands.
When: Fridays, January 27, February 24, and March 24 from 10 am to 2 pm.
Where: Lower Loop Nordic trails to Magic Meadow Yurt.
Friday, January 27: Joined by the Crested Butte Nordic Center, we’ll learn about the partnership between Nordic skiers and land conservation.
Friday, February 24: The Crested Butte Avalanche Center will share and demo some of the great work that they do keeping our community safe in the backcountry.
Friday, March 24: Learn some history of the Lower Loop area, including the Smith Hill Mine that sits above Gunsight Bridge, with the Crested Butte Museum.
