Meet Shelley Lockwood

Local artist paints holiday ornament

Safety, clean, fresh drinking water, shared land to roam, and wildlife are just several of the reasons that Shelley Lockwood fell in love with Crested Butte. “Crested Butte is one of the few places in this country that truly has a village mentality – where people look after and uplift each other. That is very special,” she said.

From painting with prisoners on death row to painting with Dikembe Mutombo to help build a clinic in the Congo, Shelley has incredible experience using her talents to make the world a better place. And painting this year’s holiday ornament fills her with joy.

“Crested Butte opened my heart and poured nature into my paintings,” she told us.

Shelley grew up in Houston, TX, and watched the effects of endless development and sprawl play out. As a result, Shelley fully appreciates working with the Land Trust to conserve and protect Crested Butte. Even as a kid, Shelley wanted to be an artist. “I always knew,” she said. “I never wanted to be anything else.”

Her colorful and inspired work radiates energy and emotion.  You can feel the joy in Shelley’s holiday ornament this year – a colorful and inspired abstract of our Valley’s splendid mountains scenes.
